Gourd-Creative-Process

The gourd begins its journey in its most natural state—fresh from the field and covered in layers of mildew and earth. Each gourd requires a thorough cleansing, so the outer shell is carefully scrubbed clean before being cut open and hollowed out. The interior is meticulously cleared out and sanded using multiple tools and techniques to create a smooth, refined vessel.

Preparing a gourd is a labor-intensive and time-honored process. The cleaning, carving, and sanding demand patience and precision, forming the essential foundation for everything that follows.

Once fully prepped, the exterior is stained using semi-transparent ink dye formulated specifically for gourds. This allows the natural markings, textures, and organic character of the hard shell to shine through—celebrating the individuality of the material itself. The interior is painted with acrylic and sealed with a satin matte lacquer, preserving the finish while creating a striking contrast.

The transformation continues with hand-dyed Danish cord, carefully sewn onto the shell. Layer by layer, the cord is coiled and stitched into intricate patterns using needlework techniques, then accented with beadwork that adds texture to the visual rhythm.

Each finished piece radiates with its own unique personality and energy.  At it's heart, my work is about transformation- What begins as something humble and earthy becomes vibrant and refined.  I strive to create pieces that radiate warmth, movement, and joy; Vessels that carry not only their natural origins, but also the creative spirit and meditative intention woven into every stitch
